Meloneras, Gran Canaria counts among its jewels the exclusive Golf Course Meloneras Golf Lopesan with probably the best fairways of the whole island. The course is situated on the south coast and only about a two minutes drive from the posh resort of Meloneras.

Craig Shaw

You will be in for a treat when playing on the carpet fairways and the smooth greens of the Meloneras Golf Course. You might even meet European Tour player, Rafael Cabrera Bello, who plays there quite often to sharpen up his game in-between tournaments.

The front nine of the golf course is quite open, with over 1000 palm trees and great views of the mountains in the centre of the island. Even though these 9 holes are quite open, it can be a challenge when the wind is blowing. And the wind blows quite a lot of the time.

Two holes are par 3, where you have to hit over water. For an average golfer this makes it a little daunting. The second 9 holes are quite different and I find a little more tricky because the wind can be quite strong. You have to be smart about what club to choose and where to place your shot.

Four of the holes run along the coast giving you fantastic views over the Atlantic Ocean which you will have to admire, especially hole 12, the Golf Course Meloneras Gran Canaria signature hole.

The Difficulty

The golf course in Meloneras Gran Canaria is good for all level of Golfers as it is not too demanding unless the wind is blowing hard. The course can be set up a little shorter in the winter, so if you want a bit more of a challenge then I would recommend teeing from the whites.

This is me playing on hole 13 with the ocean behind me.

The Fairways

Even though I’ve said all the courses on the island have fairways in great condition, this course has the best fairways out of them all. it is really like hitting your shots off carpets when playing on these fairways. Most of the fairways are flat, so it’s quite easy to walk and you haven’t got to worry too much about up and downhill shots.

The Greens

The greens are kept in great condition all year round and are quite true. The same as the fairways, most of the greens on the course are quite flat too, so you don’t have to worry too much about downhill putts or big swinging breaks. But, the breaks can be quite subtle. So study your putt closely before deciding where to aim your putt.

The David Leadbetter Academy

The David Leadbetter Academy has recently teamed up with Meloneras Golf and It is now based on the driving range of the course.

The Head pro of the academy is an English professional golfer named Gavin Hutchinson. Gavin has been teaching people from all over Europe since he started in Meloneras in 2007. And he has accumulated a lot of clients over the years because of his professionalism and his fantastic teaching skills.

I would have to say Gavin is the best teaching pro on the island and is a great teacher in all aspects of the game. So if you decide to visit Gran Canaria for some golf and would like a few lessons while you’re here, then I would strongly recommend you take a visit to the academy and book a lesson with Gavin.

Beautifully maintained course - fairways and greens. Some interesting holes on the front 9, although nothing too challenging. Back 9 stunning! Wonderful views! Some very short par 3s and 4s - good for me! All in all just loved this course! Staff very friendly and helpful. Can’t really comment on the food in the clubhouse as we only had a cheese and meat platter! Definitely recommend Meloneras golf!

Course was in excellent condition, staff friendly and helpful. Some stunning views on the back nine but not the most challenging course. Definitely worth a visit.

I wish I could give it 4.5 stars, as I have one slight frustration with this course, which is the very fluffy/cushiony grass used as the rough. Mind you, there is hardly any real high grass rough here which makes it a joy to play during a holiday. The fairways and greens were outstanding, but the rough has sometimes so much air under it that you could pass an open face 60 degree wedge under it without even touching the ball. It's clearly grass that is not used where I come from (Holland, where the real rough just swallows your ball) and it took some adjustments to make it work (a bit) for me.. My advice is to practice on that grass on their small chipping green. Forgot to ask what grass it was, it's not like Bermuda I think (played on that once in 2008) that can grip the club and try to strangle it, but weird in how high it makes the ball sit "on air". At the third round we played over the last week, my wife made her all time best score (in 25 years of golf) scoring 46 sf points, mainly due to her finding the fairways with all her driver shots to carry on nicely from there. Now she has done that before on other courses, but then the fairways didn't allow her to carry on as well from there. Back nine running alongside the cliffs is indeed more spectacular than the front. I think I counted at least 5 holes with some form of ravine to cross or coming in to play (men's tees), which is always nice if you can flush your shots. Or at least a couple :-)-Green fee discount if you stay (and book!) at a Lopesan resort.-Welcoming staff-Catering much improved since we first played here in 2020, which was 4 weeks before the covid lock downs began- We had our own clubs, but currently rental sets are TM stealth irons, plus the rather impressive carbon driver.Considering all of that, 5 stars does them justice.(hcp 17, working my way down to low teens)

It was such an amazing course. The pictures really don't do it justice, simply breathtaking, especially the back 9.Staff were amazing, I rented the cart and clubs and had to buy balls at 4 euro each, so I got 3 packs of 3. Cost me a total of £150 euro ish with playing the twilight fee. It's worth every penny for the experience.Golf clubs were Taylormade Stealth full set, so a decent set to rent. Cart had built in Sat nav and scorecard, and it was a breeze finding each hole.Overall, I loved it 😊

A very friendly welcome on arrival, we hadn't been told they had just done green maintenance, but a great touch was a free buggie. The course played great and greens were ok if a little sandy, but meant we could attack the pins. But the course was up front and honest. Two contrasting 9s, back 9 a little harder with the cliffs and revines in play. Great course overall and worth a visit. Shall try and sneak another round in before we go home. 😁

Training with Gavin was a complete success for me. I had been golfing for a number of years, but due to his precise analysis and skills, my shot lengths increased significantly and pitching and putting was also a complete success. If I had the opportunity to train with him more often, I would improve my HCP even more. Gavin recognizes the weaknesses and strengths of his students and with a lot of patience and a perfectly coordinated training, you achieve a lot and you are happy about the result. Gavin is and remains simply one of the best for me!

Stunning golf course, well kept with some lovely par 3s over ponds and fountains, the greens had been micro perforated not that you would really know but to offset that a free buggy was given out to every player who wanted one, first class service

Disgusting way to be spoken to by the green staff that close up the toilets etc in the evening, played there many many times over the years and sent many of our guests there, never again, abused for walking my dog on the public footpath, on a leash

Had some amazing lessons with Gavin. Had lots of fun learning. He always added 1-2 challenges and 1-2 instructions. So learning remained fun with some ups and downs, some successes but never boring or too repetitive. Thanks Gavin.

Beautiful golf course with some really amazing golf holes. Terrible restaurant. Unfortunate, I have to say, as this easily could be one of the best courses I've played. The kitchen staff should reconsider their profession.

I must say that it is very common to be met with snobbery at golf club houses, but this was definitely not the case here. They went out of their way to find golf carts to my pregnant gf which is so service minded! The course itself is very beautiful and scenic. You can see both the mountains and the ocean at the same time. I can highly recommend you playing here!

Our frontwindow from the car got hit by a golfball while driving the road next to the place today. The handling from their stuff in the Clubhouse was unrespectful for someone just had an accident. No sorry no nothing. I still can't believe there is a drivingrange in 90° to a road without a net or something to cover the road.

Fluffy, spotless fairways and hard, fast, spotless greens. Very fair layout, no hidden or unexpected traps, which make the course good to play even if you can play it only once. At 141 € (December) it is the priciest course in the area but the excellent condition and the interesting layout are worth it. Particularly the stretch of holes along the coastline on the back 9 is just stunning, but make sure you polish your driver so it will carry 200 yards over a valley. In short, this is golfing in paradise.
