Meloneras, Gran Canaria counts among its jewels the exclusive Golf Course Meloneras Golf Lopesan with probably the best fairways of the whole island. The course is situated on the south coast and only about a two minutes drive from the posh resort of Meloneras.
You will be in for a treat when playing on the carpet fairways and the smooth greens of the Meloneras Golf Course. You might even meet European Tour player, Rafael Cabrera Bello, who plays there quite often to sharpen up his game in-between tournaments.
The front nine of the golf course is quite open, with over 1000 palm trees and great views of the mountains in the centre of the island. Even though these 9 holes are quite open, it can be a challenge when the wind is blowing. And the wind blows quite a lot of the time.
Two holes are par 3, where you have to hit over water. For an average golfer this makes it a little daunting. The second 9 holes are quite different and I find a little more tricky because the wind can be quite strong. You have to be smart about what club to choose and where to place your shot.
Four of the holes run along the coast giving you fantastic views over the Atlantic Ocean which you will have to admire, especially hole 12, the Golf Course Meloneras Gran Canaria signature hole.
The Difficulty
The golf course in Meloneras Gran Canaria is good for all level of Golfers as it is not too demanding unless the wind is blowing hard. The course can be set up a little shorter in the winter, so if you want a bit more of a challenge then I would recommend teeing from the whites.
This is me playing on hole 13 with the ocean behind me.
The Fairways
Even though I’ve said all the courses on the island have fairways in great condition, this course has the best fairways out of them all. it is really like hitting your shots off carpets when playing on these fairways. Most of the fairways are flat, so it’s quite easy to walk and you haven’t got to worry too much about up and downhill shots.
The Greens
The greens are kept in great condition all year round and are quite true. The same as the fairways, most of the greens on the course are quite flat too, so you don’t have to worry too much about downhill putts or big swinging breaks. But, the breaks can be quite subtle. So study your putt closely before deciding where to aim your putt.
The David Leadbetter Academy
The David Leadbetter Academy has recently teamed up with Meloneras Golf and It is now based on the driving range of the course.
The Head pro of the academy is an English professional golfer named Gavin Hutchinson. Gavin has been teaching people from all over Europe since he started in Meloneras in 2007. And he has accumulated a lot of clients over the years because of his professionalism and his fantastic teaching skills.
I would have to say Gavin is the best teaching pro on the island and is a great teacher in all aspects of the game. So if you decide to visit Gran Canaria for some golf and would like a few lessons while you’re here, then I would strongly recommend you take a visit to the academy and book a lesson with Gavin.
