The Regional Folklore Festival of Maspalomas is an important date on the folklore event calendar for all the Canary Islands. The festival takes place usually on the first Saturday of June on the Plaza de San Fernando, the Centro Cultural, or the Parque Sur, all situated in San Fernando Maspalomas. The exact date is announced a few months before.

Every year dozens of folk groups and visitors from all over the Canary Islands take part in the event. Over the years it has gained a very large following, as it has become a folklore meeting between all the islands demonstrating traditional song, dance and costume with a clear purpose to promote and preserve the traditional Canarian folklore.

What to Expect at the Folklore Festival in Maspalomas

Every year the festival pays tribute to various prominent figures within the folklore community in the southern area of the island as well as to veteran groups who continue to practice their typical customs. Various activities and ethnographic research exhibits are held a few days before the festival. As part of the festival you can also see performances from Canarian comedians and solo artists whose sketches are centred around the Canarian culture.

The folklore festival starts about 9:00 pm and usually turns out to be a great night for everyone. Even if you are not a fan of folk music you will find yourself tapping to the rhythm. It is free entry. So, if you are on holiday whilst it’s on why not pop along and enjoy some typical Canarian folklore music. It can be said that practically all the Canarian folklore groups have been at one time or other on the stage at this event. Its a unique opportunity for thousands of people to get to know canarian music and customs.

If you are staying in the Maspalomas area, you can either walk to the event or take a taxi. It can be often to find parking near the event’s venue. There are several bus routes operated by Global Buses that pass by San Fernando. If you are coming from further away and don’t have your own transport, the buses are probably your best option.
