Joyce – Netherlands

Design and Social Media
Joyce is from Holland and on Gran Canaria since 2002

“I was really glad, when Joyce joined me at Gran Canaria Regional in the summer of 2017 as a freelancer. We have known each other for years, but had never worked together before. Turns out we make up a great team together.  Design and Social Media is her thing, and she is really good at both. Very soon after her joining, she became a very important part and decision maker in the numerous tasks we have to master day in and day out.”Judith

Joyce - designHiHi, my name is Joyce. I came to Gran Canaria for the first time in 1989 when I was only 9 years old. It was a two-week holiday but I fell in love with the islands straight away.

It left such a strong impression on me, that I was always thinking back to that holiday as I grew up.  In 2002, I got fed up with the wet & grey weather in the Netherlands, so I browsed the world online, dreaming about the best place to live.

One thing led to the other and somehow a few weeks later I packed my bags and I left to Gran Canaria. I brought enough money for a two-week holiday, in which period I had to find a job and a place to stay. Joyce Biersteker Now, 17 years later, I still love living here every single day and never regret the bold move I did back in the day! I cannot say life here is easier, but it sure makes it a lot more pleasurable in the sun!

I live in Maspalomas, together with my daughter and our pets. We keep adopting strays we find and we have a nice little zoo going. LOL. As a graphic designer and community manager, I am able to work from home or simply continue certain work on my mobile or laptop if I have other places to be.

Basically, I am now finally enjoying the creative & flexible job of which I was dreaming 17 years ago, before I decided to move here! It’s really great! 🙂

Gran Canaria feels like Home

Joyce MODELTo me, Gran Canaria feels like home. I love the mountains, I love the beach and I love every bit in between.

There are still so many places to discover and the island simply never let’s me down nor does it seize to amaze me! Nor do the Canarians, and their mañana-lifestyle! LOL I always say: “Living here is a package deal! You can’t enjoy the calmer way of life but still expect everything to happen on time. it is either one or the other!”

And yes, sometimes it is frustrating but worrying about it won’t make anyone run faster. So, take your shoes off, wiggle your toes in the warm sand and relaaax! Cos, tomorrow is another day! Carpe diem 🙂
