EL CORTIJO GOLF is one of the longest golf courses in Gran Canaria: It is probably also the most difficult course on the island. Measuring 6.300 metres from the white tees and 5.800 metres from the yellow tees, it can be considered a very long golf course.
El Cortijo Golf is an 18 hole championship golf course situated near the town of Telde, only a 10 minutes drive from the capital city of Las Palmas in the north and a 30 minute drive from the south of the island.
The course was opened in 1999 with an aim to serve not only the golfers but also their families. Their wide range of facilities include plenty of activities for children.
Already in 2002, El Cortijo Golf hosted the Spanish Open, which was won by Sergio Garcia.
The same as the Real Club Bandama Golf Course, El Cortijo is a members golf club. You can become a member with an initial fee, and paying yearly or monthly fees, you can use the course as often as you like. You can even hire a buggy to use for 50 times during the whole year. At the time of this writing (July 2014) they already have over 3.000 members.
El Cortijo Golf Difficulty
Like I said before, this is quite a difficult course. Adding to the length and the amount of hazards, the hard wind conditions in the area where the course is located, add to the predicament. If you decide to play this course, be ready for a challenge!
El Cortijo Golf suits mid to low handicap golfers. For the low handicap golfers who like a good challenge I would recommend to play from the championship tees. You will definitely be in for a tough challenge.
For the high handicap players that would like to play this course, I would recommend to play to your game and do not try anything out of the ordinary or go for any risky shots, otherwise you may feel sorry.
The Fairways & Greens
The fairways in El Cortijo are quite narrow, so you have to be quite accurate with your tee shots. If you miss the fairway you will be in the rough most of the time and the rough on the course is quite tough. The conditions of the fairways are reasonable good. However they can get a little dry from time to time, yet they are still very playable.
The greens have quite a lot of undulations. So after fighting to get to the green, you will still have work to do with your putts. The speed of the greens can be quite different.
There are a variety of fast and slow greens around the course of El Cortijo. Some of them can be a little patchy. However, overall they are quite nice to putt on.
The Clubhouse
The clubhouse and facilities overlook the 18th green and they are quite impressive buildings. Besides a restaurant and a pro shop, the clubhouse has a large meeting room, a terrace, a large changing room and showers for all visitors. Even a Pilates studio is available.
Within the facilities there is also a great swimming pool, a gymnasium, a swing park and games area for the kids, as well as a children’s library. As you can see, the Club El Cortijo does not only focus on the Golfers, but also on the families of the golfers.
Other sports facilities in the Club El Cortijo include a selection of tennis and Padel courts, Pilates as mentioned before, and a horse riding centre.
Although being the most difficult one, it is probably also one of the most complete golf courses in Gran Canaria. It is known for its family friendly environment and extensive sports facilities which gives the non-golfers plenty of fun things to enjoy, whilst the players concentrate on perfecting their golf swings. There are several possibilities if you would like to stay near this golf course.
The San Ignacio Golf Hotel**** is situated right in the middle of the golf course, next to a lake and surrounded by lush vegetation. This former farmhouse was renovated and modernized, but kept its 18th century colonial flair.
If you prefer a private villa with lots of space, there are other accommodations near the golf course. You can choose a rustic flair in one house or modern design in the other. Each accommodations has all the amenities to make your stay a pure pleasure. And – you are only a stone throw from the golf course.
